#13 Jackman Flats Ecological Reserve

There are Five different Trail loops varying in length from 1.4 km to 6.2 km for hiking or cross country skiing. Established in June of 2000 this 615 hectares of flat to rolling terrain with very sandy soils is home to many different types of plant and animal life, including almost 40 species of birds have been positively identified in this reserve. There are also more than 100 dunes, some have been stabilized by trees and bushes but more than half are still subject to ongoing change. Forest cover consists mainly of Lodgepole Pine, while the lack of moister impedes forest cover growth there are several plant types that have adapted to the climate. Species include dozens of Lichens, Mosses, Mushrooms and grasses. Three species of Lichens, one of which is found in no other place in the province are considered endangered.

Getting There Jackman Flats reserve is located 13 km North of Valemount on highway 5

- Stay on existing trails only, look but don't damage natural objects.

- The harvest of Pine Mushrooms within the park is prohibited

- Keep your dog on a leash at all times

- Motorized vehicles are prohibited in the park at all times

- Camping is not allowed within this protected area however visitors will find a variety of accommodations nearby
